Our History

1928

  • Martin Shanahan establishes a chemical and raw material company in Vancouver, BC, which would eventually become Shanahan’s Limited Partnership.

1960s

  • CP Distributors Ltd. is incorporated in 1962 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan as a small construction specialty distributor.
  • In 1964, Jim McGregor Sr. launches McGregor & Thompson Hardware LTD. from a 1,500 sq/ft operation in East Vancouver.
  • Shanahan’s starts an installation service and adds metal doors and frames to its product line.

1970s

  • CP Distributors expands its business under new ownership by Ken Suppes and Martin Scobie (1972).
  • McGregor & Thompson moves to a larger facility in Vancouver and opens a Kelowna location. They add hollow metal doors and frames, and later pre-hung wood doors.
  • Shanahan’s expands through Western Canada, acquiring Modernfold Alberta Ltd. and establishing Shanahan’s Manufacturing Limited in Calgary.

1980s

  • McGregor & Thompson diversifies its offerings to include locksmith supply and security hardware distribution.
  • Shanahan’s opens offices in Lethbridge, Saskatoon, Regina, and Winnipeg, and acquires Monarch Steelcraft in Richmond, BC.
  • CP Distributors expands operations considerably with new locations opening across Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan. The Edmonton and Regina locations open in 1980, Calgary operations begin in 1983 following the acquisition of Columbia Door and Hardware and a Surrey location opens in 1988.

1990s

  • McGregor & Thompson opens a specialty products division, an installation department, and completes several strategic acquisitions.
  • Shanahan’s adds offices in Kelowna and Victoria growing dramatically.

2000s

  • McGregor & Thompson doubles in size from 2003-2009, acquiring a door supply business in Seattle (2002) and opening a Nanaimo branch in 2006.

2010s

  • McGregor & Thompson and Shanahan’s join forces as one company, launching the new corporate brand AccessSMT on October 1, 2019.
  • CP Distributors opens the Halifax location in 2016 to expand operations from coast to coast.

2020s

  • CP Distributors and AccessSMT join forces on October 1, 2024, creating a new leader in the North American door, hardware and specialties industry.
